What can I do through the BeachPoint network?
The BeachPoint wireless network enables you to do the same things as with a wired connection, but with the advantages of wireless freedom.
Whats the speed of the BeachPoint network?
For the experts: a strong 802.11g network with speeds of up to 54 Mbit/sec. In practice a speed of 1 Mbit/sec can be reached easily, depending somewhat on the number of users that is online at the same moment. For the non-experts: the BeachPoint network is fast!
Is it safe?
Wireless internet through the BeachPoint network is as safe as wired internet.
Can I send email?
Yes, even without changing the settings of your outgoing (SMTP) emailserver. Your outgoing email will be catched safe and secure by our server and sent to the reciepient.
Can I use MSN, Skype, etc?
Yes, the network is even specially adapted to give priority to make Skype calls and for MSN or Yahoo chatting. In general the BeachPoint wireless network has the same advantages and capabilities as a normal wired high speed internet connection.
What do I need?
To experience the advantages of our wireless network you will need a notebook or PDA which is suited for WiFi connections. When your notebook does not have an integrated WiFi-reciever and is running at least on Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) you may buy an adapter at the reception desk of our partners or -when available- use the borrowadapter. This is a USB-stick of 1 x 2,5 centimeter.
Channels and that kind of stuff, how does it work?
Depending on the country in which you live there are 11 or 13 channels available for WiFi networking. Voor US users/equipment the number of available channels is usually limited to 11. Usually your device automatically selects the best channel of these. When a channel is not selected automatically -which happens almost never- we kindly advise you to check the manual of your computer and/or wireless device for selecting a channel manually.
What is a SSID?
SSID is the abbreviation for Service Set Identifier. This identifier works as a kind of “matchcode” to gain access to the network that you want to use. Both the wireless networking adapter on your computer and the wireless acesspoint need to have the same SSID to establish a connection in between them.
To gain access to the BeachPoint network please use ANY as SSID or select BeachPoint.nl from the list of available networks.
Wat is a RTS Treshold?
Some wireless networking devices have the option to assign a value for the RTS Treshold as a setting. Technically spoken the RTS Treshold decribes the maximum size of packets for which no Request To Send is send. A higher value for the RTS Treshold thus results in less overhead and thus a higher networking speed. In situations where there are permanently lots of other devices/computers using the same network you may decrease this value a bit to experience a better networking performance (experts only!).
Signal & speed
The signal may be restriced by thick walls with lots of metal inside it or other metal areas. Als big flat areas may (partly) reflect the signal or produce other unwanted effects. For this reason, when the signalquality is not perfect please first change the location of your computer and/or the direction that it is pointing to. Especially laptops and notebooks may be sensible for the direction as their wireless antenna usually consists of a thin wire which is hided in the housing of the screen.
